IRRIGATION BIM

Irrigation BIM Modeling & Utility Coordination

Irrigation is one of the most frequently clash-prone elements on a landscape project — buried, easy to overlook in early coordination, and expensive to rework once trenches are cut. Asterwix models irrigation networks in full 3D coordination with the wider utility corridor, not as an isolated 2D layout overlaid late.

Overview

The Problem We Solve

Irrigation drawings are traditionally produced somewhat independently of the wider MEP and drainage coordination — which means conflicts with electrical ducting, storm drainage, and foundation elements often surface only during trenching. That triggers rework, schedule delays, and disputes over who's responsible for the clash.

What's Included

Irrigation Network Modeling

We develop highly detailed BIM models of complete irrigation systems, including mainlines, sub-mainlines, lateral pipelines, valves, valve boxes, controllers, quick coupling valves, emitters, sprinklers, drip irrigation networks, sleeves, and all associated fittings. Every component is modeled using actual routing, pipe diameters, installation depths, slopes, and manufacturer requirements, providing contractors with an accurate, construction-ready model.

Utility Corridor Coordination

Landscape irrigation rarely exists in isolation. Our BIM workflow coordinates irrigation networks with stormwater drainage, sewer lines, potable water, electrical conduits, communication ducts, gas services, and other underground utilities. This multidisciplinary coordination eliminates conflicts within congested utility corridors before excavation begins, significantly reducing site delays and costly rework.

Zone & Controller Layout Validation

Efficient irrigation depends on proper zoning. We validate irrigation zones against planting layouts, hydrozone classifications, water demand, pressure requirements, controller capacities, valve groupings, and hydraulic design intent. This ensures each planting area receives the correct amount of water while supporting sustainable landscape performance and long-term operational efficiency.

Buried Services Clash Detection

Using Autodesk Navisworks and BIM coordination workflows, we perform comprehensive clash detection focused on underground infrastructure. Irrigation pipes are checked against drainage systems, utility crossings, foundations, retaining walls, lighting conduits, pools, water features, and structural elements. Potential conflicts are identified and resolved digitally, preventing expensive excavation changes and construction delays.

Construction-Ready Documentation

Our coordinated BIM models generate highly accurate shop drawings, installation plans, pipe routing layouts, valve details, controller layouts, trench sections, sleeve locations, schedules, quantity take-offs, and construction details. These documents provide contractors with precise installation information, reducing ambiguity and improving construction quality.

As-Built Coordination & Asset Information

Construction often introduces field modifications. We update BIM models to reflect approved site changes, ensuring the final as-built model accurately represents installed conditions. This digital record supports facilities management, maintenance planning, future renovations, and lifecycle asset management throughout the project's operational life.

Quality Assurance & BIM Standards

Every irrigation model undergoes rigorous quality checks to verify system connectivity, pipe elevations, component placement, hydraulic coordination, and BIM compliance. Our deliverables align with industry best practices and project-specific BIM Execution Plans (BEP), ensuring reliable, coordinated, and construction-ready information.

With Asterwix, irrigation BIM goes beyond pipe modeling—it delivers a fully coordinated, clash-free, construction-ready digital system that minimizes risk, improves installation efficiency, and supports the long-term performance of landscape assets.

A buried clash discovered during construction doesn't just cost material and labor to fix — it costs schedule float that landscape packages often don't have, since they're frequently on the critical path near project handover.
